The Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television. By George Carlin. This became one of the biggest cases against censorship in America. I believe there was a DJ who played it on the radio and the station was hit with a lawsuit. The legal battle went all the way to the Supreme Court through the years. I think it was from his album Class Clown, in 1972 I'll try to look this up.

We had a couple of his records as early teens and I remember memorizing many of his monologues with my brother and friends. Hilarious stuff, he was a genius, in my book.

Aas much as I like Carlin, he "lifted" his 7 words from Lenny Bruce's list of nine words you couldn't say on stage (hat he was arrested for saying)

Lenny's List:
ass
balls
cocksucker
cunt
fuck
motherfucker
piss
shit
tits

That's right. I read about that also on wiki.. for what it's worth. I really should listen to more of Lenny Bruce's recordings. He was one of a kind, very influential on all that followed him, likely. I guess because of the content, when I was a kid I never knew much about him. I heard more of Bill Cosby's stuff, for sure. Later, as I was a teen, Richard Pryor started opening the doors for comedians. I'm sure both he and Carlin must have been influenced by Lenny Bruce.

And don't forget Redd Fox. Those who only know hi as Fred Sanford should search out some of his "party albums".

For triple dose of comic genius, watch Harlem Nights with Redd, Richard and Eddie Murphy

Sorry youngblood, but comparing Bill Hicks and Louis CK to Lenny Bruce and Redd Foxx is like comparing Phish to the Grateful Dead.

Now if you wanna compare, how about Bill Hicks and Dennis Leary, the innovator and the imitator.

comedy is THE most subjective form of entertainment. i don't think you can really compare any comedians unless you're comparing the success they had, their styles, or something along those lines.

to compare how funny different comedians are is pointless imo. what makes something funny? it makes you laugh. so that's the only argument one can really make for how funny a comedian is. if it makes you laugh, it's funny to you and that's all that matters.

here was my 2nd favorite comedian of recent years until his tragic passing recently. i highly recommend this guy:

here's a highly offensive and hilarious segment:

is comedy really any more subjective than music, or any other form of entertainment

one man's trash is another man's treasure and vice versa

imo, it's much easier to make an argument for a piece of music than a piece of comedy. at least with the music you can evaluate things such as the vocal abilities, technical abilities of musicians, ability to play coherently together, songwriting ability, etc. i think there's a lot more to judge with music than comedy. but then again, what i'm saying now is all subjective as well!

hmm, methinks i have to disagree; for example, i can listen to a band or piece of music and absolutely find it unappealing, but even if i loathe it, i can still (if applicable) recognize the quality of the musicianship and give a nod of respect if the talent is there; the same i cannot say for comedy; if i don't find it funny/amusing/comedic, nothing is left for me to quantify; gallagher is a case in point, i have never even slightly found him funny, and most (98% at least) so-called hollywood 'comedies', atrocious and abysmal; my two pence

search for "fcc v pacifica case brief"

i took a media law and ethics course a few years ago, and this was one of the cases i had to brief. my kick-ass as teacher let us watch the whole 7 dirty words bit in class. whoever said there would be protests and lawsuit if a teacher these days brought in a tv to watch the mets game, well...there's still some really chill teachers thankfully.
